What is Yoga?
The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, which means “to join” or “to yoke”. Yoga is a practical aid, not a religion. Yoga is an ancient art based on a harmonizing system of development for the body, mind, and spirit. The practice of yoga will lead you to a sense of peace and well-being, and also a feeling of being at one with their environment.
What is Therapeutic Yoga?
A skilled physical therapist will provide an in depth analysis of your current posture and biomechanical alignment. Focus of treatment will be dependent on your individual needs. We will assess where you are imbalanced and create a program that will bring balance to your body. Yoga is a beautiful adjunct to MFR treatment. Some yoga postures offer a prolonged hold which will benefit the tissue in allowing self treatment of the myofascial network of your body. Shelley incorporates the use of therapy balls, foam rollers and pillows to assist with maintaining your home program. The goal of therapeutic exercise is to help you create a home program for daily use. This is when authentic healing occurs and you no longer need me to help you. I will give you the tools to take care of yourself.
How can I benefit from one to one yoga therapy session?
If you have always wanted to try yoga but don’t know where to begin then personalized instruction is where you should begin. Yoga Classes can be overwhelming and often the instructors are not able to give one to one instruction for you during their class and this is when you can have injuries. With one to one instruction- you will learn the limits of your body and practice basic postures that will enable you to listen to the wisdom of your body. You will know what feels safe and avoid going beyond your limits. Self-awareness is the key to a safe and life long yoga practice.
If you want to create a safe home program you can practice daily that is geared to your needs. Once you have mastered that we will then progress periodically.
